Top 10 Essentials for Living on a Boat

Inflatable Solar Light

I have gone through about 20 different lights living on the boat; headlights, flashlights, spotlights and so on. Every light I have ever had has broken except these. The best part of the MPOWERD Luci Outdoor 2.0 – Inflatable Solar Light is that it is extremely durable, second is that they charge by sun. You can deflate them to store them in small areas as well. Highly recommended!

Eva-dry Dehumidifier

These are great to hide in spots where the sun doesn’t shine and mold, musk and mildew can form. The Eva-dry Dehumidifier uses a renewable silica gel technology that works without batteries or power so it can work safely and quiet on the boat. As it absorbs the humidity there is an indicator window that contains crystals that will change from Orange to Green which is usually after about 3 weeks for me. To recharge it just plug it in the wall for 12 hours in a well-ventilated area. The process can be repeated for up to 10 years!

PortVisor™ Rain Guards

These allow me to leave my portlights open when away from the boat and not have to worry about rain everywhere upon my return. Having my portlights constantly open allows airflow as well which prevents mold and also cools you off in the summer. These shields are made of tough material that will not rust, stain or corrode. The PortVisor™ Rain Guards is polycarbonate with double UV-resistant surface treatments to protect against UV degradation. The rain visors quickly attach to the boat around the port trim ring with included 3M VHB tape. A simple thing that can drastically help with airflow.

Froli V-Berth Kit

This bed system helped me to be able to sleep on mooring. The rocking and rolling got cut out after putting this in. It is an assortment of plastic springs and bands. Also one of the best benefits of the Froli V-Berth Kit is that it raises the cushions up, allowing airflow and getting rid of mold and mildew and also helps cools the cushions.

LUNATEC Dishcloths

These LUNATEC Dishcloths are great for all things around the boat. I’ve used them on dishes, bilge cleaning, floor cleaning and even to scrub/restore my teak.  I had used sponges and rags to scrub before and they grew mold and mildew after a few uses when left on the boat. These dishcloths dry completely within an hour, are affordable, and can be reused over and over again.

GEREE Battery Capacity Monitor

I attached this little guy to my house bank and it provides a quick glance at my battery health.  I had bought one that went directly into my solar controller that cost about 10x this and gave a readout of full, half-full, and dead. The GEREE Battery Capacity Monitor  provides the volts and 1-100%. I look at it often to see if there is an electrical problem.

Davis Instruments Shockles Line Snubber

I got this line snubber for my mooring line and it drastically changed my sleep. It makes the boat less jerky when bobbing up and down in the water. The main feature of this though is the safety. The Davis Instruments Shockles Line Snubber acts as the main load bearer for my mooring lines giving them less of a work out during everyday use and also during heavy storms.

WD-40 Heavy Duty One Gallon Lubricant

There isn’t much to say about WD-40 besides I use it very very often. I was buying can individually until I found out they sold the WD-40 Heavy Duty One Gallon Lubricant. I’d highly recommend buying a gallon and using a spray bottle. It coats on thicker and you save a ton of money, plus it gives you the incentive to apply it more liberally ;).

Shelf Liner with Clorox Mold & Mildew Protection

I have these liners on all of my shelves and drawers. In the case of water leaking into either of the latter it sits your items up so they don’t mold or rust. The Shelf Liner with Clorox Mold & Mildew Protection also gives airflow to the shelves and prevents rust rings on your shelves.

  1. These are great. I use those Swiss black water bags constantly. My large plastic 5 gallon water containers kept cracking and leaking from sun exposure. I don’t have room in my cabin to store them. The bags are perfect because they roll up small and are extremely durable!
